Τhe Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects was founded in 2000 and since then has acquired a rich experience in the study of dialects.
The Laboratory operates under the direction of Prof. Angela Ralli and has a research team consisting of linguists who are department staff, Ph.D. candidates, postgraduate students, lecturers and postdoctoral students.
It is located at the Department of Philology (Building 33), and equipped with hi-tech equipment, specialized bibliographic resources and various collections of rare written sources necessary for the scientific study of dialects.
LMGD aspires to serve as a link between the scientific and the local communities in order to encourage the local authorities to take active steps for the preservation of their linguistic and cultural heritage
The dialectal database (GRee.D) offers extensive material for research on linguistic variation, history and ethnography, and makes the products of LMGD accessible to the scientific and local communities.
